Maui offers a variety of activities as vast as the volcano that towers over it and the ocean which surrounds it. A few of Andrea’s and Jill’s favorites:

Catch a wave: Check out the waves at surfing, windsurfing, and kiteboarding hot spots like Hookipa, ‘Sand Box,’ ‘Jaws,’ and ‘Slaughterhouse.’ When you’re ready to do a little board-riding of your own, sign up for lessons at www.mauisurf.com.

Put it in gear: The best way to experience Maui’s beauty is from behind the wheel. Rent a convertible and set out on the legendary road to Hana. From Kahului Airport, the road is 52 miles of 600 curves, 54 one-lane bridges, and sights that have to be seen to be believed. Park by a waterfall and rainforest filled with scenic wonders. If you’re not staying overnight at the Hotel Hana-Maui, allow plenty of time for the return trip. You don’t want to drive back in the dark.

Get wet: You don’t have to be Jacques Cousteau to see amazing underwater life around Maui. Snorkeling and diving is a way of life here, and it’s an affordable way to spend the day. Don’t miss the submerged volcanic crater of Molokini to glass-bottom boats. At the Maui Ocean Center, you’ll enjoy aquariums stocked with sea cucumbers, eagle rays, and sea turtles, too. Or, just ask us about snorkel excursions and packages.

Climb high: Upcountry Maui is an enjoyable and unexpected departure from the white sand beaches and palm trees, and a great way to see Maui in all its beauty. Horses, cows, quaint shops and authentic local life abounds here in the cooler part of the Valley Isle. Shop roadside stands for locally-grown tropical fruits, vegetables, and flowers, and visit Makawao for clothing, jewelry, and island art. Like wine? Try Tedeschi Vineyards at Ulupalakula…the island’s only commercial winery, situated in a lovely grove in the cool comfort of upcountry Maui!

Go artsy: Lots of artists and artisans make Maui their home, and it shows. On Friday nights in Lahaina, you can gallery-hop to your heart’s content, with ample supplies of complimentary wine and pupus. At Hui Noeau Visual Arts Center, they offer classes in art history, photography, and ceramics. You’ll also find art programs at hotels and resorts in Wailea, Kapalua, and Ka’anapali.)

Saddle up: The best view of Maui is from the back of a sure-footed steed, and several stables offer trail rides on the island. Hawaiian cowboys, called paniolos, will saddle you up and move you out through Makena’s lava fields, Kapalua’s rainforests, and the rainbowed, misty sunsets of Upcountry. Ask us about riding stables and packages!

Shoot the moon: One Maui “must” is a visit to Haleakala Crater, a 10,023-foot volcano that covers 21 miles of the island. Haleakala’s so moon-like, it was used as a training ground for the Apollo astronauts in the ‘60s. Brave souls can make the drive up for sunrise (bring a coat—it’s chilly, but breathtaking), and braver ones ride specially-equipped mountain bikes from the top to the bottom.

Bring on the night: In the tropics, night falls fast, and 9 p.m. is known as “Maui Midnight.” Still, you can find nightlife—although it’s as laid-back as the local surfers. In Lahaina, the streets come alive with foodies waxing eloquent over award-winning Asian-fusion cuisine. In Kihei and Wailea, bartenders mix up great Mai Tais in lively restaurant bars.

Beach it: Maui has arguably the Hawaiian Islands’ best collection of beaches, with a total of 81 stretches of sand. Check out Kaanapali’s three-mile beach, Makena’s famous “Big Beach, or Wailea’s classic stretch of sand on southwest Maui.

Hello, luau: Hawaii’s most authentic luaus happen in Maui, and the Old Lahaina and Wailea Marriott luaus are well worth a visit. Dine on authentic Hawaii’ian dishes like roasted pig, poi, and haupia, the local coconut pudding. Ask us about our favorite luau packages!
